| Hip scoring is, however you look at it, far too subjective for a small difference in scores to be of relevance; in fact any score of 18 or under on the BVA scheme could justifiably be called 'HD free' as each hip is scored on 9 points and if there is ANY doubt the scorer is obliged to issue a 1.
Under the BVA and associated schemes the lower the score the less evidence of hip dysplasia or associated damage. The schemes adopted across countries now fall into only a few groups: the British scheme which has been adopted in Australia and New Zealand, the new standardized European scheme, the American OFA scheme and just a sprinkling of other schemes and old scheme scores - however, there is rarely clear co-relation across any major schemes. At Erinveine, we recognize that the Clumber Spaniel has the worst hip score on the British Veterinary Association scale (which is used in Australasia also). However, we do not actually x-ray our breeding stock at this stage for several reasons 1) Erinveine dogs already scored have a lower average score than Australasian Clumbers, which score considerably less than the world average [ Willis report Dec 1992 world breed average 44.68, Australasia 31.33, Erinveine 29.80 - the lower the score the better; we continue to try to get a more recent analysis, but Dr Willis has now retired and no one else seems to offer this service. Which makes us wonder why anyone would bother with a scheme that offers no breeding feedback or cross-breeder, sire, or dam cross reference feedback. 2) Clumbers are prone to anaesthetic shock or reactions; this matter has been reported to the University of Melbourne researcher, but Dr Brock has not contacted us; it is also a phenomenon that has been noted across the Clumber population worldwide; for general dog anaesthetic risk check here 3) The x-ray technique means genital organs are irradiated 4) The scoring system was developed for German Shepherds, Clumbers have a different angulation and bone quality 5) We are very conscious of conformation in choosing our breeding stock, including hindquarter angulation 6) Although not statistically identified in Clumbers, the environmental conditions (feeding, surfaces, etc) can contribute as much as 60% to hip dysplasia development; for that matter pups are not born with hip dysplasia, it develops 7) The prohibitive cost of screening dogs - we still look at being charged $300-400 for xraying and plate assessment here. Australian owners considering hip scoring, contact your vet and ask if they have experience at x-raying for hips, whether they have ever been asked to repeat a plate (if they have I'd try another vet!), and have them accept you want the plates to go to: Dr R.
